Squash bugs can be one of the most challenging pests to manage in your garden. These hard-bodied insects are well-protected from predators, and they lay their eggs on the undersides of leaves, making them difficult to target with typical pest control methods. Unlike other pests, squash bugs are not affected by beneficial nematodes—*note that while squash bugs are a common garden nuisance, they are different from squash vine borers, which SF nematodes can help control.

However, there is good news: you can still effectively manage squash bugs with the right tools and techniques. Here’s how:

Supplies You'll Need

  • Duct Tape
  • Soapy Water
  • Diatomaceous Earth or Neem Oil (be sure to read the safety instructions and note that these products also affect beneficial insects)

Step-by-Step Process

  1. Remove Eggs: Use duct tape to gently lift and remove any squash bug eggs from the undersides of your plant leaves.

  2. Knock Off Adults: Shake or tap your plants to dislodge adult squash bugs, then immediately drop them into the soapy water. The soapy water will suffocate them.

  3. Apply DE or Neem Oil: Dust your plants with diatomaceous earth or spray them with neem oil. Both act as natural repellents and kill the bugs on contact.

  4. Repeat Regularly: To keep squash bugs under control, repeat this process once a week or as needed, depending on your level of infestation.

By staying consistent with these steps, you can protect your squash plants and enjoy a bountiful harvest.
